About the review

The Queensland Government is undertaking a targeted review of the Financial Provisioning Scheme (FPS) to ensure it continues to strike an appropriate balance between supporting resources sector investment, protecting the environment and managing financial risk to the State.

The review will consider whether the Scheme remains effective, efficient and fit for purpose, and identify opportunities to improve how it operates.

No decisions have been made regarding potential changes to the Financial Provisioning Scheme. Feedback received through consultation will help inform the review and future consideration of any potential changes to the Scheme.

What the review will consider

The review will consider:

• scheme performance and opportunities for expansion
• interjurisdictional competitiveness
• investment environment and operator participation
• treatment of small, mid-tier and non-traditional operators
• other considerations—for example, risk classification rules and recommercialisation of abandoned mines

What happens next?

Following consultation all feedback will be considered to help inform the review and what changes may be needed to ensure the scheme remains effective and fit for purpose.

A final report including findings of the review and recommendations will be considered by Government in 2027.
