The Mineral and Energy Resources and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024 (MEROLA Act) introduces changes to improve regulatory efficiency, enhance land access processes, and support coexistence between landholders, industry, and the community.

These changes will take effect in June 2025.

To support the commencement of the MEROLA Act, public consultation was undertaken on proposed regulatory amendments to mining and petroleum regulations.

The proposed amendments included consequential changes to re-number various provisions, minor corrections, and provisions for deferring rent payments due to hardship.

Feedback was also sought on how and when an alternative way of calculating rent may be beneficial to the resources industry.

The MEROLA Act will insert a head of power into the Mineral and Energy Resources (Common Provisions) Act 2014 to allow the Minister, by regulation, to provide an alternative rent calculation method in specific circumstances.

Consultation is now closed.

Feedback received will help inform future regulatory amendments in this area.
