The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development (the department) is seeking feedback on a proposal to excise the township of Napranum and the former rodeo grounds (Lot 6 on WP50) from the existing locality of Mission River. This excised area will then be given the new locality name of Napranum.
The Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council has requested the change to reduce the confusion with property addressing in the Napranum township. The confusion occurs because the township of Napranum is located within the fragmented locality of Mission River, which is more commonly associated with Weipa.
The proposed locality boundary amendment aims to improve service delivery by reducing confusion caused by the current locality configuration.
Localities – often known as suburbs – are administrative boundaries that are essential for the creation of valid addresses that can be uniquely and clearly identified. Valid addresses are critical to ensure the timely and accurate provision of postal, emergency, and other essential services.

Community consultation is open for two months starting from 28 November 2025 and will close on 9 January 2026.
The department encourages you to leave your feedback by making a submission below.
