What does the proposal include?

The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development is considering a proposal to amend the locality boundary of Mission River and create a new locality of Napranum.

The proposal will effectively excise the township of Napranum and the former rodeo grounds (Lot 6 on WP50) from the existing locality of Mission River. This excised area will then be given the new locality name of Napranum.

Where did the place name suggestion come from?

The Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council has requested the change to reduce the confusion with property addressing in the Napranum township.

The Napranum township is located within the locality of Mission River in Napranum Aboriginal Shire. This locality is divided into several distinct fragments and surrounded by the adjoining locality of Mission River in the Cook Shire. Being situated within the fragmented locality of Mission River in Napranum Aboriginal Shire has resulted in residents of Napranum township experiencing confusion with incorrect addressing.

The name Napranum means ‘meeting place of the people’ and is a combined term derived from two traditional languages of the Weipa area.

What would be the impact on residents and businesses in the area?

When a final decision is made, the amendment to the locality boundary will require affected residents and businesses to update their property address to reflect the change.

How will I know if the proposal is approved and my address is changing?

Affected property owners and residents will also be notified of the decision by letter.

Updates will be available online through:

    • The Engagement HQ (EHQ) consultation page (links to this page provided on the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development home page as a feature tile, and the current place name proposals/decisions web page)
    • Land Queensland Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

    How are places named?

Consistent and accurate place names are the basis of a number of vital activities, including map production, communication services, population censuses and statistics, postal addresses, and emergency and postal services.

Because of this, Queensland follows strict place naming guidelines and processes. Place naming is primarily the responsibility of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development which administers the Place Names Act 1994.

Place Names can also play an important role in the recognition of Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander People’s culture and history. Many places across Queensland are derived from First Nations languages.
